Where are they now? Groundwork Community Awards Finalists 2018 – Fix The Fells

Fix the Fells (FtF) Volunteer Lengthsmen are a group of 120 trained volunteers who support full-time National Trust upland path teams to undertake routine path maintenance and repairs to protect the spectacular Lakeland fells from erosion and damage. 

The core work of the volunteers involves ‘drain runs’ – maintenance patrols which ensure paths are kept clear and their water drainage is working effectively. 

Fix the Fells have said that it has been a, ‘truly exceptional year of Fix the Fells volunteering lengthsmen activity.’ Since winning the Groundwork Community Award, they have continued their dedicated work and launched a Young Ranger Scheme.

They have had over 127 different volunteers contribute to the overall activity in 2019. So far 418 drain runs have been built, 397 of which have been completed by volunteer lengths men. They have managed to hit their targets in regards to maintain and better the fells. There have been 97 work parties undertake, leading to 52 minor repairs and 75 lengths men repairs.

Fix the Fells are achieving great things since their community awards nomination, their passion of selfless activity completely embodies what the Groundwork Community Awards is about.
